Hiring a car at Tenerife South Airport (TFS)

Tenerife South Airport (TFS), known as Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur, welcomes travellers to the sunniest corner of the Canary Islands. Enterprise makes it simple to arrange car hire at Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur and start the journey straight away.

The airport sits in the arid, sun-baked south of Tenerife, a landscape that feels far removed from the greener north of the island. A short drive along the coast brings you to Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, the island's main resort strip. Long promenades, marinas and calm beaches such as Playa del Duque line this stretch of coastline. Inland, dry volcanic hills rise sharply behind the towns, a reminder that this coastline was shaped by the same forces as the volcano further north. It is a region of contrasts, busy resorts along the shore and quiet farming villages just a short drive inland.

Tenerife has no railway linking its towns, and buses outside the main resorts can be infrequent. Car rental at Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur makes a genuine difference here. It puts the whole island within reach, not just the hotels closest to the airport. Drivers can head along the coast to Los Cristianos, or inland to quieter towns such as Granadilla de Abona. Vilaflor, the highest town on the island, is another easy option. Further north, the motorway leads to the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in around an hour. For business travellers, this keeps meetings across the island realistic within a single day. For those on holiday, it means a morning on the beach and an afternoon in the hills are both possible. An automatic car suits the winding mountain roads well. An SUV or a 7-seater people carrier gives families more room for luggage and beach gear. Vehicle rental options for larger groups are just as easy to arrange.

Nearby attractions

Siam Park brings a slice of Thailand to Costa Adeje. It has some of Europe's tallest water slides, alongside calmer pools and a wave pool for younger visitors. It is one of the most popular family days out in the south, and easy to reach by car. Plan to spend most of a day here.

Inland, Teide National Park surrounds Spain's highest peak, a dormant volcano set among lava fields and rock formations found nowhere else in the country. A cable car climbs close to the summit on clear days. The drive up through pine forests and terraces around Vilaflor is dramatic in its own right. The air grows noticeably cooler the higher you climb.

On the west coast, the cliffs of Los Gigantes rise straight out of the Atlantic. Some reach several hundred metres high, framing a small, working harbour below. Boat trips from here often spot dolphins and, in season, whales. It makes a memorable stop for wildlife lovers, and a change of pace from the beach.

South Tenerife moves at an easy pace, with warm, dry days that rarely interrupt travel plans. The island's compact size means the coast, the volcano and quieter inland villages can all fit into one trip. Often this happens within the same day, whatever the season.
