Car & Van Hire in Wexford

Enterprise car hire locations in Wexford

Situated on the east coast of Ireland, Wexford is the county town of County Wexford and lies at the mouth of the River Slaney. It has a population of around 20,000 inhabitants and is well-known all over the country as a centre of culture. Indeed, the town has a fascinating history, having first been founded by Viking visitors who settled in the ninth century. Its quay used to be a major port in Ireland up until the 1960s before it fell into decline. However, the bustling atmosphere at the quayside has returned thanks to a substantial redevelopment programme. The town is a centre of sporting activities, particularly Gaelic games, but also football, rugby and golf.

Attractions In Wexford

Wexford is the host town of an internationally renowned Festival of Opera. Held every October, it is one of the busiest times of the year for tourists. Since the music festival began in 1951, it has gone on to gain a widely-held reputation for high-quality performances, often given by leading figures from the world of opera. A large fireworks display is held annually to coincide with the festival. At other times of the year, classical music performances can be found at the National Opera House. Other forms of music, as well as theatrical shows and dance events are put on at Wexford's well-run arts centre, which is located on the Corn Market opposite the town's library. Wexford has a number of great hostelries to discover, too. Many have live session music and serve good food. Try Greenacres Restaurant for some modern Irish bistro-style dishes or the Thomas Moore Tavern for a relaxed pub atmosphere which also serves food. If you are feeling active, then a trip to Wexford Swimming Pool and Gym may be in order. You don't need to be a member and can pay as you go. Alternatively, why not book a session with Wexford's Sub Aqua Club which has been in existence since the 1970s?

Places To Visit Outside Wexford

About 25 miles to the west of the town is one of County Wexford's most visited tourist sites. Known as the Kennedy Homestead, it is the birthplace of President John F. Kennedy’s great-grandfather. A much sought-after site for American and British visitors alike, the homestead tells the story of this famous Irish-American dynasty. The visitor experience takes place on a farm that has changed little over the years. There are a guided tour, an audio-visual display and an extensive photographic exhibition. In the south of the county, Loftus Hall is certainly worth a visit. About a 40-minute drive from Wexford, this old mansion is said to be the most haunted place in Ireland. Located on the Hook Peninsula, it has almost seven centuries of history. Now unoccupied by living residents, spooky tours can be arranged. A shorter drive from the town, the nature reserve and beach called the Raven is north of Wexford's attractive harbour. It is home to a number of rare plant species as well as being a joy for bird watching.
